Why are so-called ‘Chosen People’ always ready to prove their divine calling through violence? Contrary to the claim of many atheists, it’s not mere belief in a higher power that’s at fault; it’s belief that the Almighty has selected a particular people as his ‘Chosen’ that leads to atrocities.
In general, a nation of ‘Chosen People’ utilizes two asininities to rationalize its brutality: the ‘might makes right’ of its politics and the ‘right makes might’ of its religion. These two highly flammable assumptions, when combined, create the most volatile social compound.
Societies based on the ‘Chosen People’ delusion practice hypocrisy on a grand scale. In the USA, every sphere of life, public and private, operates on hypocrisy. It’s actually jaw-dropping to observe and also disheartening. Double-standards have become so normalized that Americans can no longer detect them; like the fish oblivious to the water it lives in. As a result, the concept of conflict of interests has disappeared from public discourse, leading to the creeping dystopia that is now full-blown. Having had their critical thinking obliterated by a life of marinating in a culture of pervasive contradictions, the shining city on a hill has become Mordor and their ‘Chosen People’ mantra rings profoundly hollow out of the mouths of Orcs.
To bring about any semblance of peace and good will on Earth, humanity needs to grow out of its congenital yearning to feel special — a yearning that creates ambition and avarice of every propensity, including the worst; the USA and Israel being its bloodiest avatars, for whom the claim of being ‘Chosen People’ serves as convenient justification to the masses. Earth will be a far saner place if and when we rid ourselves of this dangerous delusion and demand that our leaders in academia, religion and politics stop invoking the Chosen People narrative and its secular iterations — for the love of humanity; for the love of life; for the love of Earth; for the love of God!
